You generate a private key / public key pair and submit a CSR to a Certificate Authority. The contents of the CSR will form part of the final server certificate. The CA verifies whether the information on the certificate is correct and then signs it using its (the CA's) private key. It then returns the signed server certificate to you. To create our certificates we need to use OpenSSL, the easiest way to do use OpenSSL is to use Cygwin which gives us a linux-like environment inside of Windows, this gives us the benefit of being able to use all the linux based guides incase something goes wrong or if you want to generate a different type of certificate and need a guide for it (most OpenSSL guides are for Linux).
